My Friend

You crept so quietly
into my heart.
At first
I did not know
you were there.

But as time evolved,
I became used
to having you there,
and could not imagine
not knowing you.

Then suddenly you were gone
and an emptiness overcame me
as an ache I could not endure.
But I survived
and endured in an empty world.

Then one day
I looked up
from my barren dreams
to see you smiling at me again,
and life was once more complete.

For you will always be a joy
that makes life worth living,
as your smile illuminates
the deepest corners
of my heart and soul.
