Footprints

You drifted quietly ashore
on the beaches of my heart
that day.
It wasn’t like an invasion
or the storming of a castle
it was a peaceful thing.
And you left your footprints
in the sands of my soul
as delicate things.

Each night I would try in vain
to keep the rising tide
from washing them away,
finding them gone to my despair.
But to my joy you would
return again each day.

So now I have come to love
feeling of your footprints
as you gently walk
the beaches of my heart and soul.
