- The Road

I came upon despair
sitting in the road
and I found I could not pass
without taking all her grief upon myself.
I came upon agony
sitting in the road
and again I could not pass
without taking all her pain upon myself.
I came upon sorrow
sitting in the road
and still I could not pass
without taking all her loneliness upon myself.
I came upon despair
sitting in the road
and I knew that I could never pass
until I took all she felt upon myself.
Love came upon me
as I sat there in the road
and she would not pass me by
but lifted that awful burden
of all that I had taken on myself.
